Uterine Fibroids are non-cancerous (benign) growth of cells within the uterus. It is an emerging problem among the females. It can occur mostly during the child-bearing days of women. Uterine fibroids are not usually a threat to your health and can resolve easily with proper and timely treatment. But if left untreated minimal non-surgical interventions are necessary to resolve the fibroids. The first period and the menstrual cycle after UFE have minimal differences from the usual menstrual cycles.
The treatment of choice for uterine fibroids is UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization). UFE is a rising treatment option to resolve uterine fibroids. It is a minimally invasive procedure to shrink fibroids via minimal interventions. It does not require major OT settings.
UFE Treatment for Fibroids
The surgeon injects minute particles – tris-acryl gelatin (TAG) spheres, non-spherical polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and spherical PVA into the arteries supplying blood to the fibroids. The particles occlude the arteries which further blocks the blood supply to the fibroids. When the blood supply is gone – the uterine fibroids shrink and resolve gradually.
Many women may reconsider getting UFE treatment due to the fear of its impacts on their uterine health. However, UFE is clinically proven to be beneficial for women due to its positive impact on the quality of life.
The First Period After UFE
The only minor difference can be seen with getting the first period or menstrual cycle after the UFE procedure. The first period after UFE treatment varies among different females. Some females may experience first periods after UFE while reported to have lighter periods of short duration after UFE.
As fibroids start shedding immediately after the procedure some women may experience heavy menstrual bleeding during their first period after UFE. It can lead to spotting or bleeding between the periods for a few weeks. The impact is temporary and can be managed easily.
Some women may report spotting, vaginal discharge or even passing minute pieces of uterine fibroids right after the procedure which are the completely normal aftermaths of UFE.
Menstrual Cycle After UFE
Several females have reported having temporarily irregular menstrual cycles after UFE – that will resolve on its own and normal menstrual cycle can continue again. However, the majority of the women continued to have normal and regular menstrual cycles after the procedure. As a treatment option for uterine fibroids, it can improve the symptoms related to the disease but the procedure also seems to have a positive impact on relieving menstrual cramps.
If you are not in the menopausal range and have developed uterine fibroids – UFE is a good treatment option without any potential risk factors. It may affect the first period after the procedure but it settles within a short period. The menstrual cycle remains normal after the UFE only a small ratio will experience a bit of irregular menstruation but it is also a temporary effect.
